SUBMARINE MAINTENANCE UNIT (VISAKHAPATNAM)

Shore maintenance is essentail for submarines

Underwater warfare has seen rapid growth in technology since its inception. To keep in touch with this constant upgradation and latest trends the Navy has also been updating her underwater platforms, however the lack of a dedicated unit to cater specifically to rectification of operational defects on submarines was constantly engaging the attention of defence planners.

With the induction of INS Chakra a dedicated unit was created in Visakhapatnam to provide first line support to INS Chakra. The unit was named " Nav Repair Work shop" and was commissioned on 29th Sep 88. After the teething troubles associated with the creation of a new unit were resolved, it was considered that this unit can undertake for, the additional responsibility of the work load of all kinds of submaries in Visakhapatnam and to provide guidance to Western Naval Command on an as required basis on some critical systems like sonars etc. Accordingly on 1st Apr 89 NRW was rechristened as Submarine Maintenance Unit.

The unit over a period of 3 ½ years has provided support to submarines and allied establishments in Visakhapatnam and also has undertaken specialist jobs on board submarines at Bombay. The unit has not restricted its sphere of operation to submarines only but has also extended to surface fleet in Visakhapatnam and floating dock at Port Blair also.
